Leather Bags – Handcrafted in Berlin

AGNES NORDENHOLZ leather bags combine traditional craftsmanship with a precise, contemporary approach to design. Natural materials, functional construction and a restrained use of detail define the collection.

Designed in our Berlin atelier and made by hand in Berlin or in collaboration with a family-run manufactory in Saxony, Germany, the bags are produced in small quantities and intended for long-term use. Rather than following seasonal trends, the collection develops from classic handbag shapes, reconsidered through proportion, material and construction.
An important influence is the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi:

Nothing is permanent, nothing is finished, nothing is perfect.

For us, the character of a material does not end when a product leaves the atelier. Leather softens, brass darkens and surfaces develop traces of use. These changes are part of the design rather than something to be concealed.

Materials: Our Leather Handbags Made in Germany

The leather used for our handcrafted handbags is sourced from established tanneries in Germany and Italy. Much of it is vegetable-tanned, one of the oldest traditional methods of leather tanning. Instead of synthetic tanning agents, vegetable tanning uses natural tannins derived from sources such as bark, leaves and fruit.
The leather is selected not only for its appearance but also for its structure, tactility and ability to age well. Over time, its surface develops an individual patina.

Characteristic details of the collection include rope handles and solid brass hardware. Our distinctive turn lock is made especially for AGNES NORDENHOLZ in Italy. The brass is left unlacquered and untreated so that its natural colour and surface can change gradually with use.
This process of ageing reflects the idea of Wabi-Sabi, which recognises beauty in impermanence, irregularity and the traces left by time. We consider patina an essential part of the character of an object.
Other materials are chosen with the same attention. Traditional Austrian linen, originally developed for rucksacks, is used for linings and treated to make it water-repellent. Austrian mountain loden, a dense woollen cloth whose strength comes from the traditional fulling process, also appears throughout the collection.

Artisanal Leather Bags

The Artisanal line places particular emphasis on handwork. Selected leather pieces are painted by hand with graphic lines before being sewn with linen thread using the traditional saddle stitch.
Unlike a machine stitch, the saddle stitch is formed by hand with two needles passing through each hole from opposite directions. The result is an exceptionally durable seam and, at the same time, a visible element of the design.
Our leather bags for women are not conceived as pristine objects that should remain unchanged. They are made to be used, carried and allowed to age. With time, the materials acquire their own surface and history – turning each bag into an increasingly personal object.
